Post-Graduation Work Permit

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

What Is a PGWP?

The Post-Graduation Work Permit is an open work permit that allows international students who have graduated from an eligible Canadian designated learning institution (DLI) to work in Canada after completing their studies. A PGWP allows you to work for any employer in any occupation, giving you valuable Canadian work experience that can help you qualify for permanent residence.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a PGWP, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Graduated from an eligible designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada
  • Completed a study program that was at least 8 months in duration
  • Applied within 180 days of receiving written confirmation of program completion (e.g., final transcript or official letter)
  • Held a valid study permit when you applied, or were authorized to study without a study permit

Duration

The length of your PGWP depends on the duration of your study program. Programs of 8 months to less than 2 years result in a PGWP matching the program length. Programs of 2 years or more may qualify for a PGWP of up to 3 years. You can only receive one PGWP in your lifetime.

Field-of-Study Requirements

Starting in 2024, IRCC introduced field-of-study requirements for certain PGWP applicants. Graduates of college programs at non-university institutions may need to have completed a program in an eligible field of study linked to occupations with labour shortages. University graduates (bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees) are generally not affected by these restrictions.
